I love bread. All kinds of bread. I don’t discriminate.
I especially love warm loaves of bread that smell delicious and taste even better. Pieces of bread that are crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside.
I yearn for the good ole days when I didn’t pay attention to how many carbs a piece of bread contains or how much fat is in a thick pat of butter.
I’m older and wiser. My dream of eating an infinite number of loaves of bread with impunity is long gone. I know just how empty the nutritional value of bread is. Rather, the LACK of nutritional value.
With that knowledge comes a recognition that bread is an indulgence versus a necessary daily staple food. Lots of bread-based carbs and butter-based fats just aren’t healthy.
So sad…so unfair!
Fortunately, I discovered a great alternative to traditional and light sandwich bread.
All hail the Flatout!
I can’t really take credit for discovering the product. My nutritionist recommended Flatouts as a substitute for sandwich bread.
Instead of empty calories and too many wasteful carbs, this good-sized wrap offers more fiber, no saturated fat, and whole grains (healthier carbs!) to boot.
Most importantly, they’re very tasty and somewhat large. They accommodate a lot of sandwich meat (gotta get the lean protein packed in) and lots of accessory foods (lettuce, tomatoes, onions, etc).
Flatout Traditionals offer a lot of flavors, such as:
There’s also Flatout Healthy Grains, including:
- Harvest Wheat – 100% Stone Ground Whole Wheat
- Whole Grain White
- Multi-Grain with Flax
- Honey Wheat (My favorite! Package pictured above)
To reduce the number of calories a little more, try Flatout Light flavors like:
Flatouts and Foldits aren’t just for sandwiches. In fact, there are lots of healthy recipes on the Flatout website for flatbread pizzas, wraps, quesadillas, crackers, and more. There are sweet and savory appetizers, sandwiches, entrees, and desserts to try.
You can find the Flatouts and Foldits at most grocery stores. We find the largest variety at Stop & Shop.
So, if you’re carb and health conscious, give Flatouts a try and let me know what you think.
